Jess is an interesting character. Although she is ignorant
and rude, I wondered if there was a reason why she acted that certain way. This
may be the appropriate time to use the sentence, “every bully has a reason that
makes them act the way that they do.” Now that I know the reason behind Jess’s
anger and rebellious side, it makes sense. Simply, Jess used to be smart. She
wasn’t the person she is in the book until her sister, Jenn, ran away. The
reader can speculate that they were close as sisters, but now that Jenn is
gone, Jess has no one to talk to and share secrets with. She can’t talk to her
mother because they have such a broken relationship, and her vicious attitude
repels anyone her age, so basically she has nobody. However, now that she’s met
Maureen, Martin, and JJ, perhaps she has finally found people who can relate to
her.
