At the end of this novel, we find out that Rachel’s mother
is the one who actually pushed her family off the building. Although this
character probably thought she was doing the right thing, I do not agree with
her. Because Rachel’s mother is portrayed as protective toward her children
throughout the novel, I was surprised to discover that she was the one to push
her children off of a building. From this you can also assume that Rachel’s
mother thought it was best for her children to die instead of going through
life which can be agonizing especially to people of their race.
