A Long Way Down 1

In the beginning of the novel, I wonder why Martin kept Jesse from jumping off of the roof. If both Martin and Maureen had planned to jump, then why stop another person from doing the same? This makes me think that they never had any intention of jumping in the first place, and that they would never be able to bring themselves to do it in the future should they try.
