In the beginning of the novel, I questioned why Martin kept Jesse from jumping off the roof. Both him and Maureen planned on jumping themselves, so it was unclear why they'd stop someone else from doing the same. It made me wonder if they had any intentions of jumping in the first place, it was almost like they knew it wasn't a good idea by stopping her.
