Jack's choice to board the Beaver with Hamilton and sail the drugs to New York was definitely not a good decision. Even though he knew the risk of accepting the job, he did it anyway because he was blinded by the cash reward and the temptation of getting off an island filled with fighting and death. Also, because Jack was struggling with his writing, he was most likely drawn in by the fact that this adventurous journey could be the inspiration he needs to finally write a full piece. I predict that the judge will not be merciful on Jack because of his age as many keep telling him and that he will end up doing his time. However, I do think that Jack will grow from his time in jail and begin to write successfully during his time.
