I noticed a character change in Jess after the night she had with the man she referred to as "Nodog". Nodog told her that you should constantly offer yourself to the gods of Life and Death and they will decide if you live or not. This conversation about life and death gave Jess this sort of wiseness about the whole situation at hand. After this incident, she matured as a person. I believe that because of this, she also got over the feeling of wanting to kill herself. It seemed like the man was just making things up but Jess believed it and used his words to turn her life around.
