In the book, he goes home on leave. While on leave he goes to his sisters party. He goes to the garage and on his way a balloon pops and he freaks out. After that incident I thought that when his tour was over and he returned home, he would be diagnosed with PTSD, and do something stupid and end up in a bad place. Maybe even jail.
