I am surprised that Gantos took up the job on the boat. He could have went to college at Florida and persued his writing career even if he thought it may not have been the best school to go to to excel in writing. Gantos took the job to get money for a different college that he thought would be a better fit for his career path, but clearly he should not have done that because it is very risky. He would be running the risk of getting injured or also jailed.
