I find it surprising that Jack's father decides that Jack should go to work when they move to San Juan, rather than finding him a school in the area that he can go to or home school him. Most parents find their children's education very important and want them to get a good education before getting a job. Jack's parents also let him stay in a hotel all by himself, even though he is only a junior in high school. This is also surprising, because he is living all by himself at a young age.
