Once Christopher discovered that his father was the one who killed Wilmington, he could no longer live with or trust his father again. To try to regain trust Christopher's father buys him a golden retriever since his trusted pet rat, Toby, passed away. I strongly believe this was a smart way to regain trust with Christopher because he loves animals. I predict that eventually Christopher will grow to love his father again and that his new best friend will become Sandy, the dog his father bought him.
