I disagree with Jack in the beginning of the book when he would come home drunk to the bacon residence time after time. For Jack living with the Bacon's was a privilege and he threw it away with his drinking problem. While living with them he could have finished school and went to college but instead he got kicked out of their house, forcing him to be independent and leading him to live in St. Croix where things only got worse.
