I can imagine what life is like for Jack living on the ship with Hamilton, it must be nerve wrecking knowing that at any time you can get caught and arrested for sailing the hashish into New York. While aboard the boat Jack didn't have many things to keep him busy, I would imagine that this lead to him over thinking and getting him stressed out over being arrested while they were still on their journey to New York.
