Jacks life changes the second he smokes marijuana with his friend. This makes him trust a person who he admits to not even know that well with half his savings. And Tim, his friend, ends up ripping him off and Jack loses his money. Since he didn't have a lot of money to begin with, this forces him to go to St. Croix to work with his father. And he was so desperate to get off the island that he was willing to sail a boat with 2,000 pounds of hashish on it with a stranger, despite the fact he had never sailed a boat before. If he had never smoked with Tim he would have had his money and his life back.
