It was great that Gantos got offered the job as the X-Ray technician. This is a good job to have in prison because it keeps his mind busy and it keeps him away from dangerous inmates that could hurt a smaller, less threatening gantos. This job allowed him to keep his hopes up and kept him looking ahead to his future. Gantos stayed strong in prison because he knew he could succeed later in life.
