In Woman Warrior, the narrator’s mother speaks of her
husband’s sister, who was not loyal to her husband when he was across the
ocean, and had a child through the affair. The sister drowned herself after the
village raided the home, killing herself and the baby, and is never spoken of
again. The mother tells the narrator she must not ever mention the sister, and
never tells the story again. This appeared to be a representation of the Chinese
culture of that time. Infidelity was one of the most terrible actions one could
commit, and those who shame the family are disowned and never spoken of.
