A Long Way Down

In part one I understand how Martin, Jess, JJ, and Maureen are feeling but I am confused at the actions they make. The four characters agree amongst themselves that they wouldn't commit suicide for 30 minutes and continue to make the time period they have to cope with the situations that brought them there longer. They all have the same feelings about their lives but, they do not offer compassion for other people in the same circumstance as them; when I believe that they would or should.

  1. I agree with your commentary, but also disagree. Whether they should feel compassion for one another when they are in the same situation is dependent on the person. It is expected that they would feel sorry for the rest but in life, a lot of people overlook a person's feelings as they concentrate on their own. At that point in the novel, I believe that they thought they were never going to see each other again, so why bother understanding or opening up? After all, they thought they were going to commit suicide that night.
